SIS organizes a number of short-term, experiential programs abroad each summer and intersession. Program locations may change each summer to reflect the needs and interests of the SIS student population. The detailed curricula of the programs make them ideal for students who wish to concentrate on a specific region or topic area. Each one offers ample opportunity to interact with local and regional leaders, conduct field research, and engage in challenging internship positions.

How the programs work:
Students need to submit application materials in order to be considered for a program. Programs are competitive, and admission is not guaranteed.
Students earn AU/SIS credit for participation in the Program.
Students pay AU tuition and are billed through Student Accounts. Financial aid packages can apply, but students should check with the Office of Financial Aid for more information.
The Program typically covers orientation, supplemental international emergency health insurance, accommodation, ground transportation, site visits, internship placement (if applicable), and teaching costs.
Students are typically responsible for their own airfare, supplies, meals, and other personal living expenses while on the Program. Students participating in an internship are also responsible for accommodation during their internship.
Status as a graduate student at AU.
Good academic and university standing. AU students must not be on academic probation and must be cleared by the Student Conduct Office for participation. - Non-AU students must prove in their application that they are in good standing at their home institution.
Approved plan of study. As part of the application process, AU students must meet with their academic advisors to get approval for the courses they plan to take.
Priority consideration is given to SIS graduate students.
How to apply:
The priority application deadline for SIS Summer Abroad 2015 Programs is February 15, unless otherwise noted on the specific program website. Rolling admission will continue for programs until filled. All application materials are received and processed by SIS.
Students should attend an info session for the specific program they are interested in and/or download program-specific informational materials from each program website.
Most applications consist of a general application form and affidavit, a personal essay, AU transcript, résumé or C.V., and an academic advisor approval form. Some applications will require additional supporting documentation.
Students will be required to submit a program deposit to reserve their place in the program.
Students will be required to attend a pre-departure orientation at SIS prior to attending the summer program. Program details, cross-cultural communication, safety and health concerns, program logistics, syllabi and reading lists, and other important issues will be covered at the orientation.
Students will need to submit a Consent and Release Form, Emergency Contact Form, flight itinerary, proof of insurance, and a legible copy of their passport picture/number page at the orientation.
