IN AN EMERGENCY

  • Get immediate help.  Know the local equivalent of 911 so that you can get immediate emergency assistance.  Remember to heed advice from on site staff on the best manner to contact police and emergency services in your host country.
     
  • Notify your on-site contact.  Reach out to the local contact person for your program. The emergency contact numbers can be found in orientation materials that your receive on-site.
     
  • Contact your insurance provider, if the emergency is medical in nature. ACE, AU's Travel Assistance Service, can be reached at +1-855-327-1414 or +1-630-694-9764  24 hours a day.
     
  • Contact the AU Abroad Office.  During regular business hours (Monday - Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm EST), you can reach us at + 1(202) 885-1320.  After hours, you can call the AU Public Safety Office at +1 (202) 885-3636. The person who takes your call will collect information from you and immediately notify an AU Abroad staff member who can assist.
     
  • Contact the nearest U.S. Embassy.  Consular personnel at U.S. Embassies abroad are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens. Contact information for U.S. Embassies and Consulates appears on the Bureau of Consular Affairs website at http://travel.state.gov. Also note that the Office of Overseas Citizen Services in the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs may be reached at +1 (202) 501-4444.  This Office can put you in touch with the necessary local consular personnel for assistance.
     
  • Remember to program all of these emergency numbers into your local cell phone.
