Is this Program Right for You?

CUHK campusChina as a country is undergoing tremendous change in recent years. It is a place of dynamic contrasts, of rapid industrialization and technological development alongside a beautiful and rich traditional culture. At the forefront of this transition is Hong Kong. One of the world's major cultural and economic centers, this amazing metropolis is considered the crossroad of Asia, combining traditional Chinese culture with the frenzied energy of an urban, cosmopolitan city. AU students now can experience this extraordinary place firsthand through study abroad at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Academic Information

CUHK campus gardenThe International Summer School program at CUHK is a six-week session where students can take one or two 3-credit courses in a variety of subjects within Asian Studies, International Relations, Business, and the Humanities and Social Sciences. Students earn full AU credit for all CUHK courses taken.

Most classes at CUHK are composed of lectures and tutorials. You will have numerous opportunities to interact with the local students and other international students on the program, such as having discussion with them during tutorials, and working on projects or presentations together.

For more information on courses available, please visit the areas of study section on the ISS website.

NEW PROGRAM OPTION -- There is now a new additional summer program option at CUHK----the Summer Research Program. On this program option, students do a 3-credit independent research project under the supervision of a CUHK faculty member.  A wide range of research topics are potentially available.  The Summer Research Program runs from June 8 - August 14, 2015 (note, these dates are different from the regular program dates).  Spaces are limited so if you are interested, please discuss with the AU Abroad advisor as soon a possible.

Course Equivalency: View the Course Equivalency Database to find out which courses on this program have already been equated to AU courses. Please note that you are NOT limited to just these courses. Students will need to request equivalency for courses which have not been previously reviewed. Read more about the course equivalency process and how AU counts study abroad credits on our Courses and Credits page.

Student Life

Life in Hong Kong

CUHK hallStudying at CUHK puts you right amidst the vibrant, bustling life of Hong Kong. A shopping and dining paradise, Hong Kong also offers a wide choice of entertainment, outdoor and indoor, daytime and nighttime. Navigate amidst Hong Kong's sleepless entertainment world and feel the liveliness of this international metropolitan. It is also a thriving center for traditional arts and culture.

Campus life at CUHK is versatile, fun and fulfilling. There are numerous cultural programs, extra-curricular activities, clubs and sports teams that students can become involved in. As the spacious campus is spread over a hill, the University operates a campus bus service connecting the commuter train, classroom buildings and dormitories. You may ride the buses for free during teaching days. There is also an air-conditioned shuttle light bus service on campus. Getting to class and going out is easy and convenient with this shuttle bus service.

For the Summer School, a host of cultural programs are organized to enable students to discover Chinese and Hong Kong culture. These will include an orientation to help students navigate through Hong Kong, field trips to public and private sector organizations, and visits to cultural, tourist and historical sites. An optional four-day tour to a major city in Mainland China will also be organized.

Housing and Meals

Students will be housed on-campus at CUHK in a double or triple occupancy room with shared bathroom facilities. Light cooking facilities are also available at student hostels. Amenities in the student dormitories include:

  • Modestly furnished bedrooms with telephone and network connection
  • Air-conditioning operated with smart cards in all rooms
  • Blankets and bed linens
  • Laundry facilities: coin-operated washing and drying machines and clothes lines for drying
  • Shared kitchens equipped with refrigerators, stoves, boilers and microwaves on each floor
  • Shared bathrooms with showers on each floor
  • Common rooms with televisions

Students are responsible for purchasing their own meals. There is no meal plan, but there are many alternatives such as the college cafeterias, or in the university area's many restaurants.
