Student with MonksAn intensive language immersion experience in Beijing based at the China Studies Institute for students wanting to greatly improve their Chinese language ability.  Also a good program to lead into further study abroad in China or to do after other study abroad in China.

***Please note, students who are Chinese nationals are not permitted to participate in the program due to Peking University restrictions.  Chinese students should meet with the AU Abroad Advisor to discuss other program options in China.***

Academic Information

Based in Beijing, this 8 credit immersion program is a student-centered program, which has an integrated curriculum, providing students with the chance to learn much more than just the fundamentals of the Chinese language. Students learn how to interact with Chinese people in both casual and formal situations.

The program is an 8-credit comprehensive program with multiple Chinese language levels through beginner, intermediate, advanced intermediate and advanced-level of Chinese language ability. Classes focus on basic vocabulary, grammar, sentence structures, and simple texts. Participants will be taught both Chinese pinyin and character systems.

Designed to focus on developing spoken Chinese and fluency, the intensive program consists of 5 hours of class per day during the week. Oral exercises and drills ensure that participants learn the correct pronunciation. There are also various language activities to help participants to internalize everyday expressions and sentence patterns.Beijing musician

Student Life

Housing and Meals

In Beijing, students live in program housing in or near Peking University campus. Students are responsible for their own meals; there are numerous, inexpensive places to eat all over Beijing.


Man selling tea leavesThere will also be various small excursions in and around Beijing to such places as the Great Wall.

The excursions provide a wide range of opportunities for participants to practice their language skills and learn different aspects of Chinese culture from ancient to modern times.
