Study Abroad for Chemistry Majors
AU Abroad, in consultation with the Department of Chemistry, is pleased to offer a selection of study abroad programs suited for Chemistry Majors. These programs are recommended based on the academic quality of the host institution’s course offerings in the major.Keep in mind:
- Chemistry majors should go abroad during the junior year or first semester senior year.
- Interested chemistry majors should participate in study abroad during academic years when CHEM 481 and 482 are not offered at AU. These are sequential laboratory courses that are required for Chemistry majors and are only offered every other year.
- Chemistry majors can count up to 6 credit hours of pre-approved courses taken while abroad toward their upper-level major course requirements.
- Courses under consideration must be specific for science majors at the abroad institution and have instructors with a PhD in Chemistry or a related field.
- It's highly recommended that you schedule an appointment with your faculty advisor. Approval for study abroad and coursework abroad requires a review of your overall course of study.
- If you are part of the AU premedical program, you can go abroad! Many programs offer courses on a wide range of biomedical and health subjects.

Students take courses in the Faculty of Sciences, including physical, organic, environmental, inorganic, and materials chemistry.
- University of Queensland - UQ is the State's leading center of higher education. The UQ’s School of Chemical and Molecular Biosciences teaches and researches in the disciplines of chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, microbiology and parasitology.
- University of New South Wales - The UNSW is renowned for the quality of its graduates and its commitment to creative approaches to education and research. Students can study industrial chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, and food and environmental chemistry.

- King’s College London - Study right in the heart of London at one of the most prestigious universities in the UK and one of the top institutions for the study of chemistry. King’s is the largest center for education of doctors, dentists and healthcare professionals in Europe.
- University College London - Located in the center of London and one of the UK’s most prestigious universities, UCL offers excellent course options in the areas of chemistry, medicinal chemistry and chemical physics.
Ireland
- University College Dublin - Experience Ireland’s lyrical landscape and vibrant city life firsthand in the city of Dublin! Students can study organic, physical, inorganic and organometallic chemistry, as well as environmental chemistry, materials science, electrochemistry, biopolymers, and nanochemistry.
- University of Limerick - Study in the spectacular countryside of western Ireland and experience traditional Irish culture! Limerick offers strong course offerings in chemistry, including pharmaceutical & industrial chemistry and chemical engineering.
Scotland
- University of Edinburgh - Study and live amidst the charm of Scotland! The School of Chemistry is top rated for teaching and research in Scotland. As well as chemistry they offer courses in chemical physics, chemistry with environmental & sustainable chemistry, chemistry with materials chemistry, and medicinal and biological chemistry.
- University of Glasgow - One of the oldest universities in the world, the University of Glasgow has a long-standing reputation of academic and research excellence. The Department of Chemistry offers courses in medicinal chemistry, chemistry with forensic studies, and chemical physics.
