Study Abroad for School of Public Affairs (SPA) Majors

  • Generally, students study abroad between their second semester of sophomore year through their junior year. The decision when to study abroad should be made in consultation with the student’s Academic Advisor. The decision when to study abroad should be made in consultation with the student’s Academic Advisor.
 
  • Students need to let their Academic Advisor know as soon as possible about their desire to study abroad so they can meet to discuss their study abroad goals and how to fit this experience into their specific academic program and graduation requirements.
 
  • Even after courses abroad have been equated to courses at AU, students must review final course selection with their Academic Advisors.
 
  • It is recommended that students complete the majority of their university requirements before studying abroad.

Political Science Majors:

  • The Department of Government allows up to six credits of approved GOVT coursework in the body of the major. Three credits of GOVT coursework can apply to the minor.
  • Additional coursework in fields such as History, International Studies and Sociology may apply to the Major Related Social Science requirement. Please speak with your Academic Advisor to determine if this is an option for you.

CLEG Majors:

  • The number of credits accepted into the CLEG major will vary. Students should work with their Academic Advisor to discuss individual programs and how courses/credits may count towards the major.
  • All classes for major credit must be completed on the A-F grading scale. No coursework from an abroad location can be used as the equivalent to the CLEG Seminar, GOVT-489.

Justice, Law, and Criminology Majors

  • Legal Studies/Law & Society and Justice & Law majors can count up to 6 credit hours of pre-approved courses, taken while abroad, toward their upper-level major course requirements with approval from their Academic Advisor.
  • Students with a minor in Legal Studies/Law & Society or a minor in Justice can have one course from abroad apply towards the minor with approval from their Academic Advisor.
