Study at the Freie
Universität Berlin and immerse yourself in
a European metropolis. Due to its unique geographical
position between the former Eastern Bloc and the West,
the capital of Germany has a special flair. Following
the German reunification in 1990, the former East
Berlin and the former West Berlin became one city
again, after more than forty years of division. However,
today Berlin is still a place that displays its history
as a divided city.
Berlin is a fascinating metropolis, not only because
of its unique history, but also due to its diversity.
It is truly a city of contrasts and juxtapositions.
You will find areas with impressive new buildings,
emblematic of the Berlin of the 21st century. In contrast,
you will also find modest neighborhoods where time
seems to have stood still for decades. Along those
lines, the character of a neighborhood may change
dramatically from one block to the next, representative
of the city's historic and architectural diversity.
In addition to its rich history, Berlin boasts a
wide range of cultural attractions on par with the
most prominent European capital cities. Apart from
internationally-renowned art galleries, museums, theatres,
opera houses and orchestras, Berlin possesses innumerable
small theatres and cabaret venues which form an important
part of the city's cultural life. With the annual
Berlinale film festival featuring German and foreign
films, the city is a delight for every film fan and
cinephile. You can choose from more than 100 cinemas
which show a stunning selection of movies in German,
English, French or Spanish, to name just a few of
the languages. Given the city's history, Berliners
have gained a reputation for their sense of humor,
creativity and tolerance: In this city, there is room
for everyone!
