AU Abroad Student Mobility Awards
Mobility Awards of up to $2500 are available for
general study abroad. These awards are sponsored
by the Office
of International Affairs. In the field of international
study, the funds are unprecedented and highlight
American University's emphasis on global education.
Special consideration will be given to students
who plan to study abroad for an entire academic
year and who study abroad through some of AU Abroad's
newer programs. There are also special awards for
students who study abroad in North America (Canada
& Mexico) as well as students who participate
in one of our summer language immersion programs
(more details below).
Eligibility
To be eligible for consideration, you must be
an AU degree-seeking undergraduate student and complete
a general
application to study abroad. Students who have
not studied or traveled abroad in the past are strongly
encouraged to apply. Awards are granted on the basis
of merit, need, and the quality of the essay. Scholarships
are for only one semester of study in an AU Abroad
Site or Partner. Previous award winners are not
eligible. Completed scholarship applications must
be received by March 15 for Fall
programs and October 15 for Spring
programs and March 15 for Summer
programs.
Download the application.
Please note: awards could potentially
impact your financial aid package. AU Abroad grants
are considered merit-based awards by American University
and can generally only be used to pay tuition and
fees to AU and, in some cases, to cover other program-related
expenses.
North American Student Mobility Awards Sponsored
by the U.S. Department of Education's Program for
North American Mobility in Higher Education
In addition to AU Abroad's mobility awards, AU
students are eligible for special grants to cover
costs associated with studying abroad at certain
universities in Canada and Mexico. Students are eligible for awards of up to $3,000 per semester. Please contact
Tina Murray
for more information on these awards.
Summer Language Immersion Awards
Mobility awards of up to $1,500 are available for
summer language immersion programs. AU Abroad grants
are considered merit-based awards by American University
and can generally only be used to pay tuition and
fees to AU and, in some cases, to cover other program-related
expenses.
Other Financial Aid opportunities
In addition to AU Abroad scholarships, students
may investigate options available through AU's
Office of Financial Aid. The AU Office of Financial
Aid gives a listing of private scholarships offered
and provides suggestions for a scholarship search.
Additional university resources may be found through
the AU Career Center Office
of Merit Awards.
Support for international travel may be found beyond
the AU campus. Outside organizations, such as the
Institute of International
Education (IIE), provide detailed listings of
scholarship, award and grant opportunities for foreign
study programs. The US
Department of State exchange page features recent
news in international education, including prominent
grants in the field. International
Education Financial Aid is an additional resource
of useful study abroad financial information.
