AustraLearn's
program at the University of New South Wales (UNSW)
offers the unique opportunity to study in Sydney,
Australia. With a population of over 4 million people,
Sydney is the largest, oldest, and one of the most
beautifully situated cities in Australia. It is a
major business center, and the main Australian port
of call for international airlines. This exciting,
cosmopolitan city offers entertainment, shopping,
and plenty of sightseeing opportunities.
The University
of New South Wales is renowned for the quality
of its graduates and its commitment to new and creative
approaches to education and research. Its motto -
Scientia Manu et Mente ("Knowledge by Hand and Mind")
- encapsulates the University's central philosophy
of balancing the practical and the scholarly. The
University also enjoys the reputation of Australia's
leading international university with the largest
on-campus enrolment of international students and
over 200 sister university partnerships around the
world, amongst many other international activities.
Study Abroad students at UNSW attend the main Kensington
Campus. It is located 7km southeast from Sydney's
central business district, 20 minutes by bus from
the main central railway station, and 30 minutes from
the harbor and ferry terminals. Kensington is easily
accessible to the many nearby seaside suburbs and
within walking distance of acres of parklands.
Orientation
AustraLearn, an Approved AU Abroad Program Provider,
provides a variety of top notch services to prepare
students for a successful experience abroad. Students
are assigned a personal coordinator with whom they
will communicate prior to departure. AustraLearn organizes
an orientation in Cairns, Northern Queensland during
the first four days in Australia. In addition to meeting
other AustraLearn program participants, students visit
the Great Barrier Reef and a rain forest habitat where
they have a chance to discuss the culture of Australia
and its relationship to the overall study abroad experience.
Upon arrival at UNSW, the Study Abroad Office holds
a special orientation for international students.
These sessions familiarize students with the city
and cover topics such as academic advising, enrollment,
health issues, student support services and other
issues related to living and studying in Australia.
Housing
Students have the option of both on-campus and off-campus
accommodation at UNSW. One of the many functions of
the UNSW Study Abroad office is to provide accommodation.
Students have a choice of on-campus dormitories or
one of many off-campus furnished apartments or houses.
About 80% of all local students who attend UNSW live
in off-campus accommodation situated close to the
university. The apartments and houses are all of a
high standard and are furnished with equipped kitchens.
Housing applications are sent to UNSW via AustraLearn
after acceptance to the program.
UNSW's Study Abroad Office organizes a variety of
social activities during the semester including trips
and excursions to surrounding areas. More information
can be obtained upon arrival in Sydney.
* This specialty program has only 15 spaces
