| Discover the charm of Scandinavia! |
Student Life
Are you looking to go somewhere slightly different
from the average study abroad site? Why not consider
Denmark! While it has the world's oldest existing
monarchy, Denmark also has a modern democracy with
an efficient economy and a social welfare system.
Danish society, with little social inequity and no
real poverty is a population who is culturally aware
and very politically active. All of this, combined
with top-notch research facilities, makes Denmark
an ideal place to study abroad.
Copenhagen, Scandinavia's largest city, was founded
in 1167! Students will discover world class museums,
ancient cobblestone streets, and the enchanting Tivoli
Gardens alongside the latest trends in fashion, design
and architecture.
Through DIS, Denmark's
Institue for Study Abroad, American University
students can live and study in this unique environment
for a semester, full-year, or summer! Their program
is internationally renowned as well as recognized,
supervised, and financially supported by the Danish
government. A student participating in a semester
abroad coordinated by DIS will enroll in a rigorous,
thematically focused program with courses taught in
English by the best faculty available in Denmark.
Hands-on learning, European study tours, Danish homestays,
independent living, and scholarship opportunities
are just a few of the many benefits of studying with
DIS.
There are also chances to give something back to
the Danish community! Visit
DIS' volunteer website for more information about
the volunteer opportunites in and around Copenhagen.
Housing and Meals
Students can choose to live with a Danish family
or with Danish and other foreign students in a kollegium,
a student residential hall. In the homestay, meals
are provided, whereas students living in a kollegium
will need to grocery shop and cook for themselves
in shared cooking facilities. Students are also welcome
to find their own housing in Copenhagen – this
may be a good alternative for the truly independent
student.
Courses
Students enroll in one of the following thematically
focused programs at DIS:

* Communication & Mass Media
* Danish Language & Culture
* European Culture & History
* European Politics & Society
* International Business & Economics
* Medical Practice & Policy

Course schedules consist of the program's required
core course(s) (if any), the program-related study
tour, and a combination of courses from across the
various programs. The freedom allowed by this schedule
offers students the chance to explore an unfamiliar
subject area or complete required courses for a major
area of study back home. For complete details, visit
the DIS
