Health Insurance

As with all students enrolled at American University, any student attending any AU Abroad program must be insured either through the American University Student Health Insurance Plan or with a comparable health policy that likewise insures the student while outside the United States and in their country of study. All students enrolled in an AU Abroad program are also covered by American University through a supplemental policy that only covers certain medical expenses associated emergency evacuation or repatriation due to accident, illness, or death while participating in the regularly scheduled program. This insurance is covered in the student's program fee. Please note: students are not covered by this insurance outside scheduled program activities or on independent travel before, during, or after the term of the program. AU Abroad can not provide proof of health insurance for visa purposes; please contact your health insurance provider for this information.

When receiving medical treatment abroad, most likely you will be expected to pay in full at that time, often in cash. If you will be seeking reimbursement from your insurance carrier for this treatment, remember to get translatable itemized receipts or descriptions of the treatment you received. Many countries outside the US also have universal health coverage and some of the them require visiting students to be enrolled. This fee may or may not be included in the student's program fee.

It is your responsibility to determine which type of insurance plan best suits your needs for international coverage. If you are considering alternatives to AU's health insurance coverage, we recommend that you compare the international coverage offered by various policies for such items as:

  • eligibility requirements
  • duration of coverage
  • the dollar limit of the policy, per incident and in total
  • evacuation and repatriation coverage and procedures
  • the cost of the premium
  • coverage for accidents
  • coverage for prescriptions
  • contact and procedures for making claims
  • related benefits, such as 24 hour emergency contact, doctor referral service, etc.
  • coverage provided at the site you have chosen
  • permissible facilities for providing service

Enrollment in the American University sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan is automatic if no waiver form (information below) has been submitted. The insurance charge is billed to a student account unless the student completes a waiver that identifies alternate and comparable coverage.

The cost for the 2007-08 Academic Year is $1,325.00. AU Health Insurance may only be purchased for a full year, and is not available on a per semester basis. For information about the current AU Student Health Insurance Plan, see The Chickering Group, choose The Student Connection, and enter 724537 when prompted for a policy number. Also for your reference, review the insurance policies of the AU Health Center on the web.

Whether you choose a plan through AU or your own (or a parent/guardian) private plan, it is imperative that you review further documentation on the health insurance coverage you are considering.

While AU Abroad cannot recommend one plan or form of coverage over another, we do urge you to consider your health insurance coverage carefully and make a decision as to what your coverage should be. Remember that you will be responsible for any health or accident-related costs which are not covered by insurance.

Please contact AU Abroad or the Health Center if you have any questions or concerns.

Please note that students in Australia, Nea Zealand, Egypt, Rome, and Art in Italy may receive further information on required supplemental health insurance relevant to those programs.
