Payments & Registration
All Students:
Bills for all AU Abroad students will be mailed to
your home address (unless arrangements have been made
by your home school and AU Abroad) from the American
University Office of Student Accounts (OSA). It is
important to understand that you will not be billed
until AU Abroad registers you for classes. Therefore,
you MUST submit your registration (available as part
of the AUA Pre-departure Portal, Program Checklist)
by the specified deadline to allow AU Abroad enough
time to register you. Failure to submit your registration
form by this date will result in late registration
fees which will be charged directly to your student
account. It is also important to understand that failure
to comply with these registration dates may affect
payments of your federal financial aid.
If you have specific questions regarding your bill
or how to pay, please contact the OSA. You may reach
Loretta Henry at (202) 885-3558. The OSA main number
is (202) 885-3541.
American University Students:
Your bill should reflect charges for tuition, the
program fee (please check the cost sheet for further
information on costs). You will be charged automatically
for AU Health Insurance, UNLESS you have completed
the waiver through my.american.edu. You should not
be charged for student activity fees or sports center
fees. You will be charged the technology fee. American
University students who follow a set installment plan
should continue to follow this payment schedule.
Non-American University Students:
Each university has its own policy regarding payment
for programs of study outside their institution. Therefore,
it is imperative that you speak with your home school's
office of student accounts to determine to whom American
University should send the bill (to the student or
to the home university). Generally, bills are sent
to the student's permanent home address. Most students
pay American University directly for all program costs.
However, some universities require their students
to pay tuition to their home school, and then request
that American University bill the home institution
for the appropriate fees. All students whose college/university
will be forwarding tuition payments will need to contact
American University's OSA to find out the exact procedure,
address, and contact person's name to whom payments
should be mailed. In addition to communicating with
the American University OSA, students should notify
AU Abroad IN WRITING of any special billing requests.
If you have questions regarding this matter, American
University's OSA may be reached at (202) 885-3541.

Financial Aid
All Students:
All students applying for federal aid must submit
the FAFSA by the specified deadline. This form is
available on line, at the Department of Education
web site, each year after January 1st. Students are
encouraged to consult their financial aid advisors
for further information.
For any outside or private loan or scholarship checks,
it is the responsibility of the student to have the
check forwarded to the appropriate address. Therefore,
it is imperative that you speak with your financial
aid officer/counselor before you go abroad to make
sure the office has an address on file where you can
be reached (either your parent/guardian or your address
abroad).
Non-American University Students:
You will need to contact your home university financial
aid officer and make the appropriate arrangements
to have financial aid forms, checks, etc. sent either
to you abroad or to a U.S. address (to a parent or
guardian). AU Abroad is not involved in forwarding
any student's financial aid material, information,
or checks. Please contact your lending agency to make
sure they know where to forward information. All students
whose college/university will be forwarding tuition
payments will need to contact American University's
OSA to find out the exact procedure, address and contact
person's name to whom payments should be mailed. All
payments must be made to American University prior
to your departure for a study abroad program.
Every university has its own policy regarding financial
aid. Therefore, it is imperative that you speak with
your home school financial aid office to determine
whether any contractual or consortium agreements must
be signed in order to process your financial aid.
If you have questions regarding these matters, please
contact American University's Office of Financial
Aid at (202) 885-6100.
Non-AU students can not apply for financial aid through
the American University Financial Aid office. You
must continue to work with the financial aid office
of your home institution.

Course Registration for the
Semester Following Your Semester Abroad
American University students only:
While you are abroad you will need register for courses
for the following semester. All students should use
the AU online registration system via my.american.edu.
In certain cases where internet access is limited
at the host institution, students should arrange alternate
registration plans with their academic advisor.
It is also a good idea to meet with your academic
advisor before you leave campus this semester. You
should consult with him/her about what classes you
need to be thinking about taking for the following
semester. Some, not all, advisors even prefer having
their students fill out a preliminary registration
form before they leave campus. Students should make
note of their academic advisors' email addresses to
facilitate communication regarding registration.
