Experience one of the most dynamic and exciting cities in the world -- Tokyo, the capital city of Japan! Japan is a place of dynamic contrasts; an ultra-modern, high-tech urban lifestyle intermingled with a beautiful and rich traditional culture. One of the world’s major cultural and economic centers, Tokyo is an amazing metropolis unlike any other, combining traditional Japanese culture with the never-ending energy of an urban, cosmopolitan city. AU students now can experience this extraordinary country firsthand through study abroad for a full year at Waseda University, one of Japan’s most prestigious private universities, located right in the heart of downtown Tokyo.
One of the oldest universities in Japan, Waseda
University was first established in 1882. Founded
as a college with three departments under the old
system of Japanese higher education, it has grown
to become a comprehensive and premier world-class
university. The School of International Liberal Studies
(SILS) is Waseda University's newest undergraduate
division opened from April 2004. In this small and
elite college of 2,400 students, classes are taught
in English by an international faculty, and up to
one-third of its multicultural student body comes
from outside of Japan, largely from other Asian countries.
SILS offers a One-Year Study Abroad Program to international
students with an emphasis on Japanese language study.
The participants in the One-Year Study Abroad Program
can take courses with the SILS regular students. This
unique setting makes it ideal for students who are
seeking to gain a better understanding of Japanese
language and Japan through such widely varied perspectives
as politics, journalism, art, education, and industry.
