Prerequisites

Students should have at least 1 semester of college-level Spanish prior to enrollment at UDLAP. Courses for international students are available in both Spanish and English. Students who plan to enroll in academic courses given in Spanish, should have at least 4 semesters of college-level Spanish and advanced comprehension skills.

Courses

When studying at the UDLA, you are expected to take a minimum of 4 courses (24 units) and a maximum of 5 courses (30 units) per semester. Depending on your Spanish proficiency, you may take Spanish courses as a second language offered by the Language Department, content courses offered in English, or content courses offered in Spanish. Visiting Exchange students have the opportunity to take a wide range of courses in both English and Spanish.

Students pursuing academic study in Spanish, must receive a qualifying score on the language placement exam. Students can take courses in the Arts, Sciences, and Social Sciences in Spanish.

Spanish Course Levels

Beginner Level (Basic Rating): If you obtain a basic rating, you may take content courses offered in English, and/or Spanish as a second language courses. The beginner Spanish courses offered by the UDLA Language Department are:

  • LE-144-I: Grammar
  • LE-145-I: Communication

Intermediate Level: If you obtain an intermediate rating, you may take content courses offered in English, and/or Spanish as a second language courses. We recommend that you take all Spanish as a second language courses. The intermediate Spanish courses offered by the UDLA Language Department are:

  • LE-242-II: Oral Communication
  • LE-243-II: Written Communication
  • LE-244-II: Grammar

Advanced Level: If you obtain an advanced rating you may take content courses offered in English and/or Spanish, and/or Spanish as a second language courses. UDLA recommends that you take a minimum of two Spanish as a second language courses. The advanced Spanish courses offered by the UDLA Language Department are:

  • LE-341-III: Grammar
  • LE-342-III: Pronunciation
  • LE-344-III: Business Writing
  • LE-345-III: Mexican Literature
  • LE-346-III: Mexican Culture
