Come study at PUC-Rio!

Pre-requisites

There are no language pre-requisites for students who wish to attend PUC-Rio specifically to study portuguese and take classes taught in English..

Students who wish to attend regular PUC-Rio courses within their academic units should have at least 2 years of Portuguese.

International students must take Portuguese as a Second Language, taught at 5 different levels.

Courses

Students with no Portuguese language experience have the opportunity to take courses taught in English at PUC-Rio. Course content focuses on Brazilian and Latin American Studies with topics such as: culture, literature, business, design, civilization and history. Along with these courses in English, international students must take a Portuguese language class. Learn more about PUC-Rio courses in English here!

Students with Portuguese language experience can enroll in regular PUC-Rio classes taught in Portuguese. All international students are also required to take Portuguese as a Second Language. Courses are offered in three academic centers:

• Center of Theology and Human Sciences (Arts, Industrial Design, Education, Modern Languages, Literature and Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology, Theology )
• Center of Social Sciences (Administration, Business, Economics, Social Communication, Journalism and Publicity, History, Geography, Sociology, Social Work, International Relations)
  Law )
• Center of Science and Technology (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering)

Language

Portuguese language study is required while attending PUC-Rio. PUC-Rio offers 5 levels of Portuguese during the semester: Beginner, Intermediate I, Intermediate II, Advanced I, and Advanced II. All students are tested upon arrival to determine the appropriate language level.

INTENSIVE PRE-TERM LANGUAGE COURSE

PUC-Rio also offers an intensive pre-term language course that allows students to learn and experience the Brazilian language and culture before the beginning of the semester.
