Explore the cultural mecca of Melbourne!
|
Life in Melbourne
Melbourne offers something for everyone. With a
population of about 3.5 million, it is better known
as the cultural capital of the country. Gold was found
in the surrounding areas in 1851, and before long
the area was overrun with fortune seekers. The beautiful
buildings that line the streets of the city center
date back to this prosperous time period. Parks and
gardens abound as more than one-quarter of the inner
city is set aside for recreational use. In this multi-cultural
city, students will never be without something to
do as the city is famous for its wide variety of museums,
operas, theaters, dance companies, and art galleries.
The Monash Abroad office assists all study abroad
students beginning with an orientation program during
the beginning of the semester. The "Monash Mates"
program pairs each international student with a local
Monash student to help make sure that the transition
to life in Melbourne goes smoothly. Students are also
encouraged to join one of the countless club sports
in order to further immerse themselves in the Australian
student culture.
Housing and Meals
Partner students are responsible for making housing
and meal arrangements independently. At Monash, students
can choose from a range of accommodation options including
Halls of Residence (with self-catering facilities),
off-campus housing, and homestays. Students wishing
to apply for Monash on-campus accommodation must indicate
their preference on the application. Those who do
not want on-campus housing will receive an accommodation
guide for international students with their letter
of offer from the Study Abroad Office. More housing
information can be found on Monash University's accommodation
Web site.
