Life in Monterrey
Monterrey, the "city of the mountains," is the capital of the Mexican state of Nuevo León and sits in a valley surrounded by the spectacular Sierra Madre mountain range. It has long been recognized as the business capital of Mexico. While it is the wealthiest and most Americanized city in Mexico, that doesn't mean AU students will not be studying abroad! With its blend of modernity and tradition, Monterrey offers innumerable opportunities to view the dynamism that is contemporary Mexico, including the impressive changes underway and the daunting challenges that remain. Mexican folklore abounds in Monterrey and the surrounding state. The city is known as one of the great cultural centers in Latin America, featuring 30 museums and cultural centers including the best contemporary art museum of Latin America. A recent article in the Washington Post reported that U.S. Major League Baseball is considering Monterrey for its first permanent foreign expansion. Why wait? Get in on the learning, get in on the cultural experience, and get in on the fun in Monterrey!
In addition to your courses and student activities, the Monterrey campus also offers international students trips (for an additional fee) to the beach resorts of Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta, the colonial gem of Guanajuato, Mexico City, and other locales throughout the country.
Housing and Meals
The International Students Office at ITESM allows you to apply to live either with a Mexican family or with other students in University dormitories at the time of your initial application.
The homestay is a fantastic opportunity to truly become familiar with Mexican culture and everyday life, not to mention the ideal way to perfect your Spanish. Most families in the host family program include meals, cleaning and laundry services as part of the fee.
Residence in ITESM dorms puts you into the epicenter of student social life, as you are sure to make great friends while hanging out in social areas -- playing, studying, talking, or watching TV. Common laundry and cooking facilities (meal plans are not offered) are available on-site.
Should you wish to live off-campus, on-site staff will gladly provide you with information on accommodation locations, as well as assistance in understanding rental agreements, and legal issues.
