Life in Cairo
Cairo is a densely populated, bustling city full
of restaurants, museums, clubs, and all manner of
cultural activities. Crowds are a fact of life in
Cairo.
In 2008, AUC will be relocating from downtown
Cairo to New Cairo. Compared to the current
7.3-acre campus, the new
campus spans 260 acres and is being designed to
accommodate 5,500 full-time students and 1,500 faculty
and staff, with room for further expansion. AUC's
City for Learning will offer state-of-the-art educational
resources to students and faculty, and its environmental
sensitivity will be exemplary. The construction project
is regarded as one of the biggest in the country,
with a total cost of $400 million. **Students should
expect some inconvenience and confusion as AUC relocates
to the new campus.**
New Cairo is designed to be a predominantly middle-to-high-income
residential community with schools, cultural facilities,
commercial enterprises, government agencies, hotels,
open spaces, parks and the AUC New Campus at its center.
The latest
images of the new campus are available on the
AUC Web site.
Housing and Meals
Partner students are responsible for making housing
and meal arrangements with AUC independently. Once
accepted to AUC, students should download and submit
the AUC housing application by the deadline.
The dormitories house both students and faculty.
Security guards protect the facilities 24 hours a
day. Separate entrances for male and female sections
ensure privacy, while common areas on the ground floor
provide comfortable settings for activities, dining
and socializing. Since most Egyptian students live
at home while studying at AUC, the dormitories house
mostly international students and faculty, creating
a diverse environment. Students are strongly recommended
to live in the AUC dormitory, for at least their first
semester in Cairo.
An Egyptian company provides a variety of food outlets
on the new campus, ranging from Egyptian, Italian
and Asian cuisine, to fast food.
Delicious Inc, which operates the Cilantro retail
coffee shop chain brand and a consortium of food outlets,
will offer three types of outlets on the new campus.
The kiosks - such as Cilantro - will serve mostly
salads, sandwiches, and deserts, while the food court
will have an assortment of hot, cooked meals. In the
separate dining halls, faculty, students, and custodians,
will be able to choose from a hot buffet.
Schedule
The AU Cairo program is available for Fall semester,
Spring semester and Full Year. Students take courses
Sunday through Thursday. AUC closes for AUC closes
for Egyptian national holidays, Islamic religious
holidays, Eastern and Western Christian holidays,
one American national holiday (Thanksgiving), and
New Year's Day.
