The Australian National University (ANU) commands a magnificent position between lake and mountain in
the center of Australia's capital, Canberra. It is the political apex of Australia, houses the Federal
Parliament, and is located about three hours drive southwest of Sydney. It is the major city of the
self-governing province, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
Canberra is a very modern city, founded less than 100 years ago. The city is also the cultural heart of
Australia, with the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery of Australia, the High Court of Australia
and the National Museum of Australia all a short distance from the city center. These and many other
national institutions provide a significant cultural backdrop, as well as a host of resources, for
visiting students. Most Australians regard Canberra as "the pollie city": home to Australia's
Parliament and diplomats from over 70 countries, it is a place for politicians and public servants.
The ANU campus, established over 50 years ago, is walking distance from downtown Canberra. Located in
lush parkland, it is punctuated by open spaces and low-rise buildings. Approximately 10,000 students
study at the ANU, and international students comprise about 12% of all students. ANU is comprised of six
schools in Arts, Asian Studies, Economics and Commerce, Engineering and Information Technology, Law and
Science.
