Internships and Course
This is a six-credit program consisting of an internship in the areas
of politics, the arts, or media, and a single course.
The Internship provides students an excellent opportunity to obtain work experience in a student's area of interest and explore the professional aspect of another culture. Upon acceptance to the program, students provide information on their background, experience and areas of interest for an internship placement. With this information, onsite staff work to provide an internship placement that fits as closely as possible to the student's stated interests and background. Although an internship is a guaranteed element of the program, students must have some flexibility in the type of internship placement; no guarantees can be provided for a specific kind of internship.
The required course of the program which supplements the Internship experience is described below:
British Life & Cultures
(3 credit hours; required)
The aim of the course is to take students beyond the initial aspects
of cultural difference and to offer insights as to what makes
British culture distinct. The course will cover the historical processes
that have shaped British society and that govern the social attitudes and
outlook of modern Britons. In addition, the course will offer
some practical assistance in enabling students to adapt to the context
of living & studying
in London, including several field trips to re-enforce the
material taught in class. The course aims to facilitate student orientation
in the context of British society and the workplace, and to offer an important
socio-historical framework.
Details on a student's potential internship placement are provided upon the students arrival in London. The first two weeks students will have an orientation, internship interviews,
and meet for intensive course work. Upon finalizing the internship placement after the interview, students will
then intern four days a week during normal working hours. The British Life
and Cultures course continues as a weekly seminar. This weekly seminar
will also function as a space for reflection on the internship experience.
