Every summer UPEACE offers a variety of intensive courses (worth between 1-3 credits) over a roughly three week time frame, depending on the credit hours. Students from AU can enroll in one or more courses as long as they do not have overlapping dates. Courses cannot be taken concurrently due to UPEACE’s intensive course format.
To view additional offerings, please visit the UPEACE Course Catalogue. Applications due March 24, 2017.

In addition to the courses listed above, UPEACE also welcomes students to their campus during the summer for the Summer Peace Institute. These courses, offered over three weeks in June and July, offer students the opportunity to engage with special guests who work directly with the UN and other international organizations while learning about the UN's sustainable development goals. The program also offers a one-week field component away from UPEACE's main campus.

In addition to AU tuition for three credits, students are required to pay a program fee of $2,386, directly to UPEACE. The program fee includes administration, transportation, accommodation, meals, and community service opportunities. Students are responsible for international airfare.

As UPEACE is an English-language institution, there is no Spanish language pre-requisite. However, students are encouraged to study Spanish prior to beginning the program in order to gain communication skills for daily life in Costa Rica.

All AU students are encourage to apply. Students from the IC, ID, EPGA, IPCR, and GEP programs might find courses that can be easily applied to their SIS degree.

Applies to summer courses only: AU tuition, international airfare, accommodations and meals. See above for cost information related to UPEACE's Summer Peace Program.

Students are required to make their own travel arrangements to and from Costa Rica and must find their own accommodations for the duration of their course(s). Support to secure housing will be offered by the University for Peace, but will be at the expense of the student. Some on-campus accommodation may also be available, but is not guaranteed. More details will be made available in the pending program guide.

Applications for UPEACE courses (excluding the Summer Peace Institute) will be accepted on a rolling basis until March 24, 2017.

Once admitted to the Program by SIS, students receive notification via e-mail. At that time, students will be required to submit a non-refundable deposit of $300 to SIS, through a check or money order made payable to American University, to secure their place in the Program.

Students must read the entire program guide before applying. The updated program guide will be made available in the Forms section of this website in the spring semester.
