Is This Program Right for You?
The multicultural society of South Afirca reflects a country rich in history and deep in the spiritual identity of Ubuntu, an ethnic ideology reflecting the attitude of human connectedness and togetherness. This attitude is part of the strong fabric that has held South Africa together as a unified Nation after the fall of Apartheid, a brutal system of racial segregation, in 1994.
AU students have the opportunity to study at the University of Cape Town through the Council for International Education Exchange (CIEE) program in South Africa. The city has a remarkably relaxed feel for a large city with an intense political history. The University of Cape Town (UCT), founded in 1829, is the oldest university in South Africa. While it was traditionally a university for white, English-speaking South Africans, it has diversified its student body since the end of apartheid and is now roughly 50 percent white. UCT has 20,000 students, of whom 3,000 are foreign students. UCT has an open campus, set in the bustling Rondebosch suburb of Cape Town. Rondebosch and the nearby Observatory area feel a bit like Adams Morgan, with shops, cafes, and restaurants catering to students.
Academics
UCT has expansive academic offerings, allowing students to pursue the academic courses necessary to satisfy AU major and minor requirements. Studying abroad in Cape Town allows students to earn credit towards their AU, while providing firsthand knowledge of contemporary South African life and society. Courses may be taken in all University of Cape Town faculties excluding Health Sciences and Law. Please consult the UCT website for more detail on course offerings. AU grants credit ONLY for the "Arts & Sciences" program of CIEE at UCT .Student Life
Although CIEE offers a selection of housing options, AU students are required to stay on campus in UCT Residences or participate in a homestay.
Students live in apartment-style UCT residence halls with South African or other African students. Students have small single rooms and share kitchen and other facilities with two or three other students. All of the residents of the apartment share basic cleaning duties. Students are responsible for their own meals which are not included in the program fee. Students can prepare their own meals or eat at establishments on or off campus. Please note that amenities are more basic in the UCT residences, but students looking for an immersion experience will enjoy interacting with South African and other African students. Shuttle buses link UCT residence halls with all UCT campuses, a five-minute ride.
Students opting for a homestay will be placed in communities that were historically not white. Some meals will be included and homestay participants will have the opportunity to participate in family life. Students electing this option should expect to commute up to 30 minutes via public transportation at their own expense.
AU students studying at UCT have the added benefit of having a full-time staff at CIEE dedicated to student services. CIEE provides extra administrative support, personal attention during the pre-departure process, an airport pick-up service, an on-site orientation, excursions, and activities, including community service, throughout the semester.
You will have access to alumni contact information when you start an application for the program. Please consult with your AU Abroad Advisor for more information.
