Program Description:

Is This Program Right for You?

Set on South Africa's eastern coast, the port of Durban is a large metropolitan city in the largely rural province of KwaZulu-Natal. Durban spreads out on the coastal plain a few miles below the hills that contain the Howard College campus and the 40,000 students attending the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). In addition to extensive academic offerings available at UKZN, the university offers extensive sporting, cultural and extra-mural facilities. The newly merged University of KwaZulu-Natal is poised to become one of South Africa's leading institutions of higher education.

Academics

UKZN is a direct enrollment  program. Students can elect to study abroad at one of two undergraduate campuses: Howard or Pietermaritzburg. Students in the humanities and social sciences will likely be placed at the Howard College campus.

AU students can decide which of the campuses to attend based on their academic interests. Please consult the UKZN faculty handbooks for more information:

  • Faculty of Education
  • Faculty of Human, Development, and Social Science
  • Faculty of Health Sciences
  • Faculty of Management Studies

Students are required to take a full course load while at UKZN, normally 3-5 courses.

Summer Option

AU Abroad is pleased to offer a summer program option at UKZN.  Information on the summer school course options can be found here. Please note, because of the calendar differences, the summer school program is not a direct enrollment program.  All courses are offered specifically for students in the program.  Upon successful completion of two courses, students will receive 8 AU credits.  Students should consult with their advisors to determine eligibility for the service learning program, prior to application.

Student Life

Housing and Food

Students will be housed on campus  in rooms that are self catering, and participants will be responsible for arranging their own meals.  Students will have their own sleeping quarters and share kitchen, bathroom and common areas.  Students are housed with local students that draw from all ethnic communities in S. Africa.

Student Life and Support

AU has partnered with Interstudy to offer this program to AU students.  As a result a wide variety of student support will be provided,  both before arrival and during the study abroad at UKZN.  Before leaving students will have assistance in developing academic proposals as well as support in securing study permits (visas) and the option of a group flight.  While studying at UKZN Interstudy will provide students with an orientation upon arrival and has developed a buddy system to help students adjust to life in S. Africa.
