Program Description:

This Contemporary Issues in Kenya and Africa AU Nairobi program is run by American University and designed for students who want to intern and study in Kenya for a semester or an academic year in an extremely dynamic environment. All students live as residents in the African city of Nairobi and explore history, politics, development, gender, and international relations in an academic and cultural context through your courses and program sponsored excursions in and out of the city, including an rural homestay experience. Students will share orientation, accommodation, and excursions with students attending the AU Nairobi Public Health program or the AU Nairobi Environment and Human Health program. All students participate in a internship in Nairobi, take required language and subject courses at the AU Nairobi Center, and have a choice in taking one three credit course at a partner university. Each semester students earn 16 credits.

Students are encouraged to have taken a cross-cultural class such as SISA 341 Intercultural Communication, SOCY 110 Sociology of the Global South, or ANTH 110 Culture and the Human Experience, or equivalent before studying abroad in Kenya.

Students interested in applying for this program must make an appointment with the AU Abroad Senior Study Abroad Advisor to open an application.
