Program Description:

Is This Program Right for You?

Through the  Council for International Educational Exchange  (CIEE), AU Abroad students are now able study at the University of Ghana and receive AU credit. This program offers fantastic opportunities, in the classroom and in the community, for students interested in critical issues of public health, development, and African history and culture. This program is also geared towards those involved in studying the political and economic challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa and developing nations, and those interested in studying West African cultural practices in various musical and dance forms. Through these avenues, students become participants in, and contributors to, Ghanaian intellectual, cultural, economic, and social life.

Established in 1994, the CIEE program at the University of Ghana provides an opportunity for students from all academic disciplines to live and study in Ghana, learning firsthand about the country and its people, while continuing to pursue their own academic goals. These goals are achieved through integrated study with Ghanaian students and immersion into the cultural and social life of the university and the surrounding community.

Academics

Ashesi University CollegeCIEE's programs in Ghana offer you the opportunity to directly enroll at the university, taking your courses along side local, degree-seeking students.  The University of Ghana at Legon was founded in 1948 as a constituent college of the University of London.  It is one of Africa's oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education.  Home to about 30,000 students Legon offers a wide variety of courses in the Humanities and Social Sciences, with an exceptional program in International Relations.  Extensive offerings in Biology and Chemistry are complimented by the presence of a Tropical Disease Institute and Medical School.

Student Life

Legon CampusStudents live in an international student residence on-campus or in off-campus residences. Meals, which are not included in the program fee and are the responsibility of the student, may be taken at either the university cafeterias or at outside vendors.   A limited number of homestays may be arranged but are competitive.  In homestays, some meals are provided for, but transportation to and from campus is not.

A variety of activities and excursions are included in the CIEE program, and are included in the program fee.  For students who do not elect to take an internship for credit, volunteer opportunities are available throughout the term.

You will be able to contact alumni of this program once you start an application.  Please consult with the AU Abroad advisor for additional information.
