Study Abroad in French Speaking Countries

  • Generally, students study abroad between their second semester of sophomore year through their junior year. The decision when to study abroad should be made in consultation with the student’s academic advisor.
  • It is recommended that students plan with their academic advisor to complete AU Core requirements on campus before or after studying abroad
  • Currently AU Abroad offers programs in the following French speaking countries: France and Morocco. Each program site requires a different level of French for admission, and each has a unique structure in terms of the language of instruction and the type of students with you in the classroom.
  • Students pursuing a major or minor in French language should consult with the World Languages and Cultures Department Program Advisor in advance of studying abroad to discuss which requirements can be taken abroad.

 

PROGRAMS THAT REQUIRE NO PRIOR STUDY OF FRENCH

France: API Paris

  • Program structure:  This program is designed to be an intense study of French language and culture.  Students take an intensive language course at l'Institut Catholique of varying levels based on a placement exam as well as content courses in French or in English.

France: Neoma Business School

  • Program requires:  No French language required for students who wish to take courses instructed in English. Students who wish to take courses in the business curriculum in French are recommended to have FREN 223 or equivalent.  All students are required to take some French language classes for non-native speakers. 
  • Program Structure:  This program is offered as a direct enrollment option at a specialized institute for the study of business.  Students can elect to take business courses in English or French, and can fulfill BLC requirements.  

PROGRAMS THAT REQUIRE ONE SEMESTER PRIOR STUDY OF FRENCH

France: Sciences Po Lille

  • Program requires: Completion of FREN 122 or equivalent
  • Program structure: Courses are available in French and in English, depending on a student's level, both with other international students and with French students.

PROGRAMS THAT REQUIRE TWO YEARS OR MORE OF COLLEGE LEVEL FRENCH 

France: API Grenoble
  • Program requires: Completion of FREN 223 or equivalent
  • Strongly encouraged: Completion of FREN 322
  • Program structure: Students take an intensive language course with complimentary 2 credit courses in French on subjects such as Business, Culture, History, and Film.
France: Mission Interuniversitaire de Coordination des Échanges Franco-Américains (MICEFA)
  • Program requires: Completion of FREN 323 or equivalent
  • Program structure: Courses are taught entirely in French.  Participants take courses immersed in the classroom with other French students where little to no concession is given to students who are non-native speakers.
France: IFE Paris
  • Program requires: Completion of FREN 323 or equivalent
  • Program structure: Courses are taught in French and include five weeks of intensive coursework followed by twelve weeks of a Field Research based internship where students culminate the semester with a significant research paper.
Morocco: AMIDEAST Regional Studies in French
  • Program requires: FREN 323 or equivalent. 
  • Program Structure: Students take all courses instructed in French, which are offered for the participants in the program. Students may also take Moroccan Colloquial Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic.
