Reentry/Reverse Culture Shock
How can I help ease the transition back
into American life?
Home just isn't the same when you return from a
term abroad. You have grown as an individual, changes
have occurred in your community and your outlook
on American culture has likely been altered. You
are not alone in your feelings. Feelings of reverse
culture shock often stronger the longer you have
been away. Several things can help.
Talk to someone about it
The AU Counseling Center can also be helpful resource
for students who are having trouble reassuming life
here at AU. Contact the counseling center at (202)
885-3500 or stop by Mary Graydon 214.
Connect with others
Come to our Welcome Back Reception (link to Calendar
event) and share your experiences with other AU
Abroad returnees who are experiencing the same thing.
Other ways in which you can ease the transition
back to AU is to reach out to international
students on campus, who are likely going through
their own culture shock and can offer important
insight.
On-line resources
Several websites are devoted to issues of culture
shock and cross-cultural understanding. Here is
