General Pre-departure Information
What's the next step after receiving my
acceptance to AU Abroad?
Students must pay their non-refundable deposit ($300 for Summer or $500 for Fall/Spring semesters) to confirm their spot in the program and to gain
access to the pre-departure forms and reading materials
(see below). Students should submit a completed
Acceptance Confirmation and Deposit form, with
their deposit. Students may pay by check, money
order or credit card. Cash is not accepted.
You must confirm your acceptance and pay your deposit
in order for AU Abroad to make arrangements on your
behalf! Keep in mind that the deposit deadline
is March 1 (Summer sites), April 15 (Fall sites)
and November 1 (Spring sites).
You should also confirm your application on-line.
Simply follow these steps:
- Log into your AU Abroad on-line profile with
your username and password.
- Go to "Application Status" next to
the appropriate program/semester.
- Click on "Confirm/Reject Acceptance"
- Mail the printed Acceptance Confirmation and
Deposit sheet along with your deposit ($300 for Summer or $500 for Fall/Spring semesters) payment (check

Please note: the deposit is wholly non-refundable.
Can I pay my deposit on-line?
No.
Once I've paid my deposit for AU Abroad,
will I receive pre-departure information?
For optimal communication and efficiency, AU Abroad
will correspond with you electronically during pre-departure.
In March (Summer programs), April (Fall programs)
and early October (Spring programs), AU Abroad will
launch a pre-departure Web site, where you will
have access to a checklist of forms and reading
materials to prepare you for your semester abroad.
You should also read through our Predepature
Info site. It is important that you share this
information with your parent or guardian as well.
These Web site is your key to a positive internship/course
work experience. Among other details, the information
you provide on-line will determine the kind of housing
and internship you will get abroad. Allow yourself
some time to reflect on your answers. AU Abroad
Enclave participants: Please note that if you fail
to provide your internship and housing profile,
as well as the accompanying documents in a timely
fashion, you will not get placed. The earlier you
submit your information on-line, the better your
chances for a good internship/course placement.
Please note that you must complete all forms on-line
by the deposite deadline, unless otherwise noted.
While you can return to edit most forms you've submitted
on-line, AU Abroad strongly encourages you to limit
changes as your departure date nears, after most
arrangements have been finalized and new requests
can not be met.
Do all programs require me to obtain a
student visa?
No, not all programs require visas, but most do.
To see the status of your program/country, look
for the visa information found on the "Application,
Visa, Cost" page of each program's Web site.
For those of you who require a visa letter, one
will be sent to your perferred address after your
program deposit has been received. Please make sure
that your permanent and school address information
is listed correctly in our Web site (using "Change
login and contact information" link after logging
into the student site)! Since applying for a visa
can often require months of processing, we urge
students to take care of the necessary details ASAP!
I want to plan my travel and book my airline
tickets. How do I find the program dates?
AU Abroad generally receives program dates in mid-March
(Summer sites), the beginning of April (Fall sites)
and the beginning of October (Spring sites). The
most recent semester's program dates are listed
on the "Student Life" page of each programs'
Web site. As soon as AU Abroad receives the newest
program dates, they'll be posted on that Web site.

After AU Abroad
When will I get my grades?
Grades for abroad may be posted considerable later
than grades here at AU. This may mean weeks or months
depending on when your host institution mails transcripts.
This may effect seniors planning to graduate immediately
after a study abroad program. This may also impact
a students registration status for the following
semesters and the timing of posting of a student's
financial aid. As soon as AU Abroad receives an
official transcript from your host institution we
will send them to the Office of the Registrar for
processing. Please be aware that your host institution
may hold your transcript due to unpaid fees such
as library or housing fines. Make sure all financial
issues have been resolved prior to your departure.
Thank you for your patience!
I'm a non-AU student. How can I get a transcript
sent to my home school?
Your home school will be anxious to receive your
transcript from AU. Students must download and print
a transcript request form and submit it to the Office
of the Registrar at American University. Please
fax your completed transcript
request form to (202) 885-1046. You may also
mail your request to:
Office of the Registrar
Attn: Transcripts
4400 Massachusetts Avenue, NW
Asbury Building, Room 200
Washington, D.C. 20016-8064
For more information on transcripts, please visit
the Registrar's
Web site .
