Courses

Imagine enhancing your French language skills this spring through a unique program at La Sorbonne, the institution that's synonymous with the sophistication, elegance, and the history of Paris. During AU Abroad’s France: Paris Enclave program students study through the Sorbonne's Cours de la Civilisation program for international students - and earn a semester of American University credit. These credits are readily transferable to other colleges and universities. Following are descriptions of the courses offered.

Paris Civilization and Culture
(SIS 335; 3 credits - Required)
In order to understand contemporary French life and culture, one must grasp the major outline of French culture and history. This course, taught in English at the beginning of the semester, proposes a broad chronological overview of French and Parisian history enhanced by weekly on-site lectures at monuments corresponding to each period. In addition, students examine contemporary Paris in its daily expression, such as the use of space, eating habits, and public comportment. This course does NOT count towards the French major or minor at AU.

Islam in France
(SABD-301-001S; 3 credits)

French Grammar and Phonetics: Cours Practiques or Cours Alleges
(Cours Pratiques, SABD-300-001S, 9 credits OR Cours Alleges, SABD-300-002S, 4 credits - Required)
Your skills in speaking, reading, and writing French will vastly increase during the semester, as you intensely study at the élémentaire, moyen, or supérieur level, depending on your knowledge of the language. Covering similar topics as “French Grammar and Phonetics: Cours Pratiques” students at the appropriate language level may find this less intensive language course appealing. It allows for more time in a student’s schedule to take advantage of the Sorbonne’s course offerings and gain valuable work experience. Please Note: Cours Alleges is ONLY offered during Spring Semesters.

Following are descriptions of topics covered in each level:

Niveau élémentaire
Even if you have not studied French previously, this level will give you a strong foundation in French-language speaking, writing, and grammar.

Niveau Moyen
Improve your writing and communication skills in the French language by studying syntax, semantic and idiomatic expressions, and phonetics. Improve your writing and communication skills in the French language by studying syntax, semantic and idiomatic expressions, and phonetics.

Niveau Supérieur
Students will master French composition and conversation. Take additional course(s) in French Civilization and Culture.

Conférence Courses
(SABD-301; 2 credits)
For students with a high level of French language skills, additional "conférence" courses in French Civilization and Culture are offered each semester. Past semester offerings have included: Introduction to Contemporary French Society, French Literature of the 19th Century, French Politics, and History of Modern French Art.

A typical course load for the Spring semester resembles
