Life in Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya’s mile-high capital, is only 90 miles south of the equator. Formed as the nation's capital by the British about one hundred years ago, the city is now home to close to three million inhabitants. Nairobi is a modern, cosmopolitan city that offers many up-to-date luxuries such as theaters showing the latest films, internet facilities, and a variety of nice restaurants with flavors from all over the world. It also houses embassies and offices from all major governments and international organizations, including the headquarters for the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP).

AU’s partnership with USIU offers students the opportunity to partake in regular Kenyan student life. Students will also have full use of all facilities at USIU, including the library, computer centers, sporting facilities, cafeterias, and membership in student clubs and societies. A shuttle bus with designated times of arrival and departure is also provided for USIU students to get to and from campus, which is approximately a 45 minute distance from the city. Students may also choose to use public and private transport.

Housing and Meals

Students will live in Njema Court, a private and secure apartment complex in Westlands, Nairobi, offering fully furnished three bedroom/two bathroom apartmetns. These apartments include a TV, kitchen, laundry room and most laundry services. Each apartment will house at least four students. This cost is included in the program fee; however meals are at the student's own cost and are not provided.
