Spain: Madrid and the Mediterranean -
Excursions
|
Let Turkey's many flavors
and colors brighten your palette!
|
The Madrid to the Mediterranean Enclave program incorporates
study trips to several important Mediterranean sites
into academic program. These site-visits are most
strongly incorporated into the required Seminar course,
but several other courses draw on the information
presented during this visits as part of the course
material. Past destinations have included various
cities in Italy,
Greece
and Turkey!
Turkey is a country with ties to both Asia and the
Mediterranean. Its extensive coastline straddles continents
and cultural-political identities. After the fall
of Rome and during the European Dark Ages, Turkey
was the torch that kept western civilization alive
in Constantinople (now Istanbul). During the semester
you examine this unique culture first hand through
your travels to Istanbul and Bosphorus, as well as
historic visits to the Blue Mosque, Roman hippodrome,
the Great Bazar, and the ruins at Ephesus.
You also explore sites in the ancient city of Athens,
including the Parthenon, the Acropolis, port of Piraeus,
temples, theaters, the civic center (Agora), the meeting
places of Athenian democracy, and other major archaeological
sites and monuments. Students visit important historical
sities, including Rhodes (home of the Acropolis of
Lindos), Santorini, Mykonos, and Patmos.
Few cities have had a greater impact on the Mediterranean
region than Rome. Epicenter of the Renaissance, the
city boasts one of the greatest collections of artwork,
museums, churches, monuments, architecture, and relics
in the world. Experience the past glories of the city
as you visit the 2000 year old Colosseum; the Vatican,
an ever-present reminder of the history and influence
of the Catholic Church; Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel;
piazzas such as Piazza di Spagna, location of the
Spanish Steps; and other sites.
