Academics
Students earn a full semester of American University
(AU) credit. Following are descriptions of the courses
offered. In addition to the REQUIRED Course (3 credits)
and Internship (6 credits) which are required, students
select two additional courses from the Electives list
below. Students should work with their Kogod Advisor
to determine whether the electives could possible count
for Specialization credit. All elective courses (NOT
the required course and the Internship) have been approved
by the Kogod School of Business for business credit.
REQUIRED Course
British Life & Cultures
(SIS-309-001S; 3 credit hours; required)
The aim of the course is to take students beyond the
initial aspects of cultural difference and to offer
insights as to what makes British culture distinct.
The course will cover the historical processes that
have shaped British society and that govern the social
attitudes and outlook of modern Britons. In addition,
the course will offer some practical assistance in
enabling students to adapt to the context of living
& studying in London, including several field
trips to re-enforce the material taught in class.
The course aims to facilitate student orientation
in the context of British society and the workplace,
and to offer an important socio-historical framework.
Elective Courses
Fundamentals of Finance (KSB-396-002S; 3
credit hours)
The course seeks to introduce students to fundamental
concepts in corporate finance and provide an understanding
of basic financial calculations. The course also aims
to provide a basis for further studies related to
managerial responsibilities and financial markets.
International Business and Culture (KSB-396-003S;
3 credit hours)
Today's world of global business increasingly requires
the ability to do business interculturally. As companies
strive to serve international and even global markets,
they require managers located in different countries
and operating across national boundaries to function
effectively. It is important to develop not just an
international perspective, or "global mind set", but
intercultural understanding and skills as well. This
course will focus primarily on cross-cultural communication
and business etiquette issues in the United Kingdom
and European countries.
Economic Integration of the European Union
(KSB-396-004S; 3 credit hours)
The course provides a comprehensive examination of
the processes of European economic integration and
a critical analysis of EU policies in their broader
political-economic context. It focuses on the external
dimension of Europe in the global economy, the integration
processes of the EU, including the Single Market,
Economic and Monetary Union or the Common Agricultural
Policy, and its impact on global economics, ranging
from the World Trade Organization to EU enlargement
and the Third World.
International Marketing (KSB-396-005S; 3
credit hours)
This course enables students to develop a thorough
understanding of international marketing theory and
key concepts. Topics of particular emphasis will include:
International differences in consumer behavior; challenge
of managing and delivering high quality service to
customers in a cross-cultural context; international
branding strategies and issues; and global marketing
strategies from a European perspective.
International Trade (KSB-396-006S; 3 credit
hours)
The course will review international trade theory;
examines how culture influences international business
decisions; explores how all functional business areas
(operations, marketing, management, accounting, finance,
human resources and law) change in international setting
thus developing a strategic framework for analyzing
international business decisions. The course will
provide a thorough review and analysis of the international
trade and business environment and applied this knowledge
to practical aspects of doing business in international
markets.
