With a population of 2.1 million people, Havana,
the capital of Cuba, is the second largest city in
the Caribbean. Havana is the vibrant cultural center
of Cuba, where its inhabitants are surrounded by music,
artwork, and colonial architecture. The University
of Havana was founded in 1728, and it is the premier
university in Cuba.
While the political relationship between the US and
Cuba has been volatile at times and strained for most
of the past fifty years, there is a friendly fascination
on the part of Cubans about the United States and
its citizens. The history, socio-economic situation,
the culture, and the spirit of the Cuban people are
likewise of great interest of Latin American scholars
at American University and elsewhere.
The AU Abroad Enclave in Havana program will take
a small group of carefully selected students to study
at the University of Havana, taking a special curriculum
of courses designed just for them. Please visit our
“Academics” link on the left-hand toolbar to see a
list of classes.
The program is operated jointly by American University
and the University of Havana. An AU graduate student
will serve as the Resident Director for the program
and primary support contact for the participants,
while in consultation with staff at the University
of Havana.
Students are required to study Spanish through their
stay while the remaining courses may be taught in
English. Qualified students may opt to take a regular
university course taught in Spanish.
