Courses
You can earn a full semester of American University (AU) undergraduate credit
during the Brussels
program. These credits are transferable to most colleges or universities.
Following are descriptions of courses offered in the Brussels semester.
European
Union Seminar I: The Government and Politics of the
EU
(SIS-380-001S or SIS-380-003SH; 4 credits - Required)
In European Union Seminar
I, you learn about the institutions, politics, policy-making procedures, and
foreign policy of the EU. You study the history of European integration and examine
future EU initiatives concerning Central and Eastern European countries. Through
this course, you are introduced to the role the EU plays in world politics and
its relationship with other major powers
European
Union Seminar II: The Political Economics of the EU
(SIS-380-00S or SIS-380-004SH; 4 credits - Required)
European Union Seminar
II focuses on the theory and practice of the EU's economic and monetary union.
Coursework and field trips introduce you to the process of EU integration, economic
policy-making, and trade policy. You learn about the challenges associated with
the Euro and with adapting the EU's economic policies for accession.
European
Security and Defense Economics
(SIS-380-005S; 4 credits – required)
European Security and Defense Economics
studies the strategic, political, and economic dimensions of European security
as the EU evolves toward a common foreign and security policy. The first part
of this course, taught by a high-ranking NATO official, covers the history and
politics of European security policy. The second part examines the economic constraints
on the EU's efforts to create a common defense policy.
Living
in French
(FREN-224-001S; 1 credit)
This optional course is primarily designed to help
students with a good understanding of French grammar improve their oral and aural
comprehension skills so that they can use French in everyday life. Students with
no French knowledge are encouraged to enroll and learn the basics of the French language.
