Cross-Cultural Considerations for American Students of Color Abroad

The opportunity to study and live abroad can be a life-changing experience for anyone. Many students of color who return from abroad comment on how "American" they realize they are, while living in a country where their national identity takes on a greater presence than an ethnic identity. Appreciation of a national identity is normal, as well as an appreciation for a place of origin or heritage.

The term "Heritage Seeking" refers to individuals who return to a country or area of their ethnic origin. Students may go abroad in order to seek out information about their ethnic heritage and find that as a "Heritage Seeker" abroad they become either more aware of their ethnic heritage, more aware of their American identity, or both.

Depending on the country, some students of color may experience staring and many questions about their national identity. Some students find this atmosphere strengthening and self-assuring, while others may experience culture shock from being in a different culture.

You should consider learning about the culture of curiosity and tolerance in your host country prior to departure by asking past program participants, program directors, or reading materials about the country. You can also ask your AU Abroad advisor if another student of color has attended a program in the past, and you can be matched with another student to learn about their experiences.
