AU Enclave Programs
Students attending AU Abroad Enclave
Programs choose from a special selection of
courses offered each term. Classes tend to be small,
with emphasis on discussion and student-faculty
contact. Usually, these courses focus on local culture
and society, history, international politics, literature
and language. Courses for each AU Enclave Program
are listed under the "academics" section
of each Enclave program website.
AU Partner/Provider Programs
Unlike with Enclave programs, AU Abroad Partner/Provider
Programs require that students transfer credit from
the Partner Institution back to AU using a Course
Approval Form.

Completing Your Course
Approval Form
AU Abroad students take courses abroad that ultimately
appear as American University courses on their AU
transcript. Students complete the Course Approval
Form prior to attending their AU Abroad Partner
or Provider to ensure they receive credit in their
academic department. Undergraduate students must
take 12 to 17 credits each Fall or Spring semester
to be considered full-time. Graduate students are
considered full-time at or above 9 credits. Summer
programs allow for 3 to 6 credits, depending on
the site.
You should research course options at your Partner/Provider
institution and print course descriptions from their
website or course catlog, and discuss these options
with your Academic Advisor through your School.
You should allott plenty of time to discuss your
options with faculty, in order to determine the
AU Course Equivalent for a course abroad. This process
takes patience and research in advance. Contact
your AU Abroad Advisor if you are unable to locate
academic information or course descriptions on the
Partner university's website.
