General AU Abroad Application Requirements
To participate in AU Abroad Fall, Spring and Full Year programs, students must be at least a second-semester
sophomore, are required to have a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and the approval of their academic advisor. Certain Partners and Providers require a higher GPA, as indicated in their description. Summer programs have 2.5 minimum cumulative GPA requirement and students must have reached sophomore status (30 credits completed) by the time of participation. Individual program descriptions indicate whether certain language and course prerequisites are required for admission.
General Education Requirements
Students are normally expected to have completed their General Education courses by the end of the sophomore year, which experience serves as preparation for study abroad. General Education requirements may not be fulfilled abroad. Any student who wishes to study abroad before completing at least 80% of their General Education courses should discuss how they will plan to complete their General Education requirements on their return to AU with their academic advisor.

*Certain programs may fill prior to AU Abroad's stated deadlines. Please contact AU Abroad for more information.
(Please Note: Certain programs,
including the Prague Enclave program, some Summer
Internship programs and some Partner and Provider
programs, may have an application deadline unique
to them which may be earlier than the standard deadline.
Please be sure to check the specific program's apply
page.)
Step 2: Application Materials for all programs
- $35 non-refundable AU Abroad application
fee in the form of check or money order payable
to American University, ONLY if you have not paid
on-line. Cash is not accepted. Check
your specific program's "Application, Visa,
and Costs" webpage to see if there are additional
application fees for the Partner/Provider application.
- Explanation of intent to study
abroad, a cover letter or essay indicating your
motivations for applying and your plans for your
semester abroad (300-500 words). Students submit
their essay on-line.

Supplemental Essay
Questions for AU Abroad Enclaves. Students
should download and submit the answers to the
supplemental questions with their other application
forms to AU Abroad.
- Signature of your Academic Advisor
on the "Advisor
Authorization Form". (The form is also
accessed from your personal AU Abroad on-line
profile; required for all programs.)
- Official transcript
- Judicial
Affairs Disciplinary Clearance Form. (The
form is also accessed from your personal AU Abroad
on-line profile. Drop it off at the Judicial Affairs
and Mediation Services office in Butler Pavilion
floor 4. They will fax your Form to the AU Abroad
office. Please allow at least 1-2 weeks
for processing.)
- Enclave
Letter of recommendation from a professor
(or Academic Advisor for non-AU students) on university
letterhead or the AU Abroad recommendation form.
(required for AU
Abroad Enclaves only) NOTE for Cuba program
applicants: You must obtain actual letters on
letterhead. Do not use the form.
- All materials required
for the Partner University or Approved Provider's
application. (See the program description
and speak with an AU Abroad advisor for details.
AU Abroad will mail your complete application
to the Partner or Provider. Make
sure that ALL application materials are submitted
to the AU Abroad office- DO NOT send any materials
directly to the partner university or provider.)
**The course approval form is no longer required
as part of the application process for partner
and provider program. This form will now be completed
as part of the pre-departure process.**
